Join the Centre for Kurdish Progress and the Kurdish People’s Assembly – Britain for the launch of The Kurds of Northern Syria: Governance, Diversity, and Conflicts with co-author Wladimir van Wilgenburg in the Dalston Kurdish Community Centre on Friday, 6 September 2019 from 6:30-8:30pm.

Based on unprecedented access to Kurdish-governed areas of Syria, including exclusive interviews with administration officials and civilian surveys, this book sheds light on the socio-political landscape of this minority group and the various political factions vying to speak for them.
The first English-language book to capture the momentous transformations that have occurred since 2011, the authors move beyond idealized images of Rojava and the Kurdish PYD (Democratic Union Party) to provide a nuanced assessment of the Kurdish autonomous experience and the prospects for self-rule in Syria. The book draws on unparalleled field research, as well as analysis of the literature on the evolution of Kurdish politics and the Syrian war. You will understand why the PYD-led project in Syria split the Kurdish political movement and how other representative structures amongst Syria’s Kurds fared. Emerging clearly are the complex range of views about pre-existing, current and future governance structures.
Author Biography
Wladimir van Wilgenburg is an on-the-ground based reporter and analyst specialized in Kurdish affairs. He graduated from Utrecht University with a MA in Conflict Studies in 2011, and from Exeter University with
a MA in Kurdish studies in 2013. He covered several major battles against ISIS in northern Syria, and Iraqi Kurdistan and other subjects for outlets such as Middle East Eye, Daily Beast, The Region, Defense Post, Al Jazeera, and Foreign Policy. Furthermore, he conducted research and analysis for several think tanks such as Carnegie Endowment, Atlantic Council, and the Jamestown Foundation. He was one of the few Western reporters to cover Iran’s latest attack on Iranian Kurdish opposition parties in Koya on September 18, 2018.
